Soldier stands guard outside Royal Place in Prague

Outside the Royal Palace in Prague this soldier stands guard. I’m not so sure that he was happy to have his photograph taken as he kept giving me funny looks. There again it’s maybe because I couldn’t go through that door.

Prague Castle (Czech: Pražský hrad) is a castle in Prague where the Kings of BohemiaHoly Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have had their offices. The Czech Crown Jewels are kept here. Prague Castle is the biggest castle in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records the biggest ancient castle) at about 570 metres in length and an average of about 130 metres wide.

The castle buildings represent virtually every architectural style of the last millennium. The Prague Castle includes Gothic St Vitus Cathedral, Romanesque Basilica of St. George, a monastery and several palaces, gardens and defense towers. Most of the castle areas are open to tourists except this door where the guard was. Nowadays, the castle houses several museums, including the National Gallery collection of Bohemian baroque and mannerism art, exhibition dedicated to Czech history, Toy Museum and the picture gallery of Prague Castle, based on the collection of Rudolph II. The Summer Shakespeare Festival regularly takes place in the courtyard of Burgrave Palace.

The neighbourhood around the Prague Castle is called Hradčany.

  1. Thanks for including the history of the castle with the photo. I keep learning little things, here and there. I’m sure the guard at the door felt rather helpless while you took his picture. Poor guy. What a job to have.

  3. That guard is definitely giving you the eye Mike! So many wonderful lines coming together in this great shot and the epaulette/ribbons give it a good splash of cheer!

  4. Great photo choice for this challenge! I really like how it seems he’s trying to look at you from the corner of his eye without turning his head. Nice! 🙂

  5. I’m wondering why he was smirking too! I thought they were supposed to be stoned cold, but maybe that’s just the Queen’s guards at Buckingham Palace. Either way, cool photo.

  6. There is so much texture and contrast in this photo. You have the diagonal painted lines on the guard’s box linking with the diagonals in the wooden doors. YOu have the triangular patters with horizontal lines contrasting with each other and the strong stone paving on the roads. I think this is a very interesting photo.
Thank you for listing my blog in your post too.

  7. Mike – a terrific photo. You were able to make the guard stand out so well. Lots going on in the background, too. I enjoyed this composition. And, thanks for the pingback!
