Weekly Photo Challenge: Friendship

Over the years I have worked in a many countries and during those times have met many acquaintances and one friend. Why do I use the word acquaintances, rather than friends? Well, although I have met many people and we had fun and did things together the interest in each other waned as we each moved on to other contracts in other places. It’s in our nature to make new acquaintances where ever we go and they become our new “Best Friends”. Yes, we may keep in touch with the old acquaintances, exchanging the annual Christmas Card, but eventually you lose touch.

Wikipedia defines Friendship as a relationship between two people who hold mutual affection for each other and the value of friendship is often the result of friends consistently demonstrating the following:

  • The tendency to desire what is best for the other
  • Sympathy and empathy
  • Honesty, even in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth
  • Mutual understanding and compassion; ability to go to each other for emotional support
  • Enjoyment of each other’s company
  • Trust in one another
  • Positive reciprocity — equal give-and-take between the two parties
  • The ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings and make mistakes without fear of judgement

I only know of one person who consistently demonstrates all of those qualities. My Wife. We met in Cyprus, got engaged six months later, married six months after that and have been together for nearly 37 years, She is my true friend.

  1. How odd. I could have written those same words (was thinking about it, but didn’t bother!).

We met and married within four months. And my mate is my only friend too. Ten years behind you though on the anniversaries!!

  2. How beautiful, Mike! That’s a wonderful love story to your wife.

I truly thought about putting up a photo of my husband and I, as he’s been my best friend for 41 yrs. But my setting isn’t the gorgeous one you have there! Yowza! We were sitting in front of some weeds. ;(
    Great post!

  4. Totally agree! My husband and daughter are truly my best and consistent friends. Outward from our circle of 3 flow the ripples of many, many, many friends who are in and out of my life. We may be in touch a few times a month…a year…or several years. But they are still friends. When we reconnect, the quality of time spent in each other’s company is what matters.

Your photo exudes the warmth of your friendship with your wife…

    😉
