The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin and Germany. It is located west of the city center at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which Berlin was once entered. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin (Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation).[1] Today, it is regarded as one of Europe’s most famous landmarks.

It is a great structure. I’ve got loads of photos of this, taken from what was West Berlin when the wall was up. This is the first time I’ve been able to take one from what I would call the right side, mainly because of the way the statue is facing

Hi Steve, Berlin is an amazing city, both during the day and night. I should know I lived there for 3 years. Of course like all big European cities Berlin has some amazing architecture and history and I’d highly recommend a visit to anyone who has never been there before. Second only to Vienna, Berlin is on my list of great European cities to visit.

It’s not as hard as it seems. A good tripod and a slow exposure on your camera will catch a well lit building easily enough, thank you for your comment though.

A grand entrance, for sure. Such majesty is the norm in Europe…not as apparent in the U.S. Although we have our own treasures as well. 🙂

From waht I’ve seen Washington has a few great entrances to photograph, one of these days I’m going to visit. Some of the buildings in Charleston and Savanahh maybe not as grand but the do have some great entrances.

At the time I never noticed them. I was concentrating on getting the building in focus etc. Behind the Brandenburg Tor is a long straight road which leads to the Soviet War Memorial from WW2. It’s the light of this road you can see.
