Weekly Photo Challenge: Wonder


What a strange subject for this weeks photo challenge. I have always wondered how these insects manage to cling to leaves even when there is a strong wind blowing….

Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be distinguished by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along, and parallel to, the body when at rest. Furthermore, the hind wing of the damselfly is essentially similar to the fore wing, while the hind wing of the dragonfly broadens near the base. Damselflies are also usually smaller than dragonflies and weaker fliers in comparison, and their eyes are separated.

I was lucky to catch this one resting on the leaf. It was early morning, the sun had been up some time but this one was warming itself before starting the days activities.

  11. not only a lovely image, but so informative too. I had often wondered about the difference between damsels and dragons.

    Most of my insect shots end up as a blur!

  14. love this image Mike – i wrote a story a while ago about dragonflies and doing the research found out so many fascinating things – did you know the world’s largest dragonfly is actually a damselfly – its wingspan is about 19cm and its body length is approx 12 cm…
    One Australion dragonfly was clocked moving at 58kph or 36 mph
