It’s A Kind Of Magic

Well for me it is. Over the years I have tried to capture a Kingfisher with little success. Too far away, or flying too fast for the camera focus to lock up on, always a disaster when I looked at the photographs. Until yesterday. So here it is my first ever Kingfisher that I’m happy enough to show you.

Kingfisher

To me that’s magic….

That’s it for this week, a really short one but I wanted to show you the photograph, not ramble on.

    1. It’s a funny thing Discover and I wonder how many people actually use it, Cynthia. Still I’m not complaining and the last time I was featured on Discover things got really busy for a few days. I had a lot of emails to reply to.

    1. I was lucky Colline. The area where the Kingfisher visits and hunts has been flooded with heavy rain water and exceptionally high tides. All of it’s normal perches have been covered with water, so it came a lot closer to the hide to fish, making it easier for me to photograph and best of all on the day I went to the lagoon the light was fantastic.

  1. Mike you doing hard thing. In India no body time for nature. Even a child can’t tell 10 birds name. Thanks for Post. And nice photo.

  3. At first I thought “oh it’s just a bird” & I found myself scrolling back up to look at it’s colors and the nature surrounding it. It made me stop for a minute. So thank you 🙂

  4. As Kingfishers Catch Fire
    By Gerard Manley Hopkins

    As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
    As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
    Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell’s
    Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
    Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
    Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
    Selves — goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
    Crying Whát I dó is me: for that I came.

    I say móre: the just man justices;
    Keeps grace: thát keeps all his goings graces;
    Acts in God’s eye what in God’s eye he is —
    Chríst — for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
    Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
    To the Father through the features of men’s faces.

  5. This is such a striking photograph of a tiny, so cute & very fast kingfisher. I wonder how you did it but you captured it so breathtakingly captivating. You have an eye for beauty, its hues of blue & orange colors with splashes of white are bright & vivid, Your photo is indeed magical! I really enjoyed looking. Keep on keeping on, capture more of nature’s beauty.

    1. The normal area were she hunts was flooded by heavy rains and all her normal perches were under water. So she came much closer to were we were set up to photograph her. Just luck I guess

  6. It always amazes me how a simple subject such as a bird can open our eyes to the wonders of the beautiful world outside. The colors you have captured in this lovely image are truly stunning and show the natural intensity that is within life.

  7. Fantastic shot; your patience paid off. You were in a hide, I see in one of your comments. A lady I know on PEI has told stories of how many outings and how long it took her to get a shot of a Kingfisher. I know that without a blind/hide you can’t get within 100 yards of them before they fly off!

  8. I just found you on discover.
    Great shot and well done for never giving up. I find birds one of the hardest subjects to get right but you nailed it with this kingfisher.

      1. I really appreciate the skill and patience that it takes to get those kind of wildlife photos. I really like your work. One of the things I am enjoying most about WordPress is the thoughtfulness and professionalism of the contributors.

  9. Congratulations on finally getting the shot you wanted! In college I wanted to do a “how long it took” art show where all of the rejected, ruined, blurry, just-not-quite-right shots were layered underneath my final photograph. There literally wasn’t enough room in the gallery I was showing in to do it haha

  10. That’s an awesome picture. I reminds me of a movie I watched when I was a kid, where if you find the blue bird that means you find happiness. I wish I could find my blue bird now. Lovely bird and amazing picture.
