Paul’s Photography Challenge: Water

Here we are with another entry for Paul’s Photography Challenge. Interesting one this, especially as I was in the Lake District, famed for the volume of water to be found there.

Paul's Photography Challenge: Water

Pity it rained most of the weekend which didn’t make for great photography.

But I did manage to catch this one whilst walking around a park in Ambleside. Although it’s an HDR image I also used a 10 stop ND filter to really slow the shutter down and give me that milky look in the water as it falls over the rocks. I’ve had the filter sitting in my camera bag for a year and to be honest I’ve only really used it once before with less than successful results.

  1. nice work Mike…I love my 10 stop but have never thought to use it on a river shot…worked out well here. Pingback works too. 🙂

    1. Must admit I like this one myself, Yvonne. I didn’t realise how good it was until I got it home. Early evening, the sun low on the horizon lighting the wall, the water almost fluorescent, beautiful.

  2. Honestly this milky water thing is such a cliché. How many ND filters have been sold simply to flog this dead horse? it’s so eighties. I’m sorry but I just can’t stand it anymore. Having said that, the way the light falls on the mossy dry wall and the contrast with the shadowed water is beautiful.

  3. Having clicked on send without thinking I really have to apologise for the vociferous tone of my comment above. I really should have said extended exposure shots of moving water aren’t to my taste. I check these challenges regularly and have learnt a lot from them. I’m also anti HDR which will probably be of no surprise. But I’m slowly being brought around by the beauty in some of the shots I see in this blog.
